Welsh MEP issues call for evidence to improve future EU funding schemes

Derek Vaughan MEP

Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, today launched a call for organisations in Wales with experience of EU funded projects to come forward with their ideas and views on how to make the process more effective and efficient.

In his role as draftsperson, on behalf of the European Parliament’s influential Regional Development Committee, of an Own Initiative Report – the EU equivalent of a Private Members Bill – Mr Vaughan has been tasked with drawing up proposals to help streamline EU Cohesion Funding.

He said:

“The Own Initiative Report provides a unique opportunity for everyone in Wales who has been involved with the EU funding system to contribute to the debate on what works best and what can be improved.”

“I am keen to hear suggestions on how this money can be better distributed, how unnecessary duplication can be eliminated and what can be done to maximise the impact that the funding can make to local communities.”

“I regularly visit EU funded projects across Wales and see at first hand some excellent examples of how this investment is making a huge difference.  We need to spread the best practice that exists and I welcome the chance to include the opinions of Welsh stakeholders in my forthcoming report.”
Submissions for consideration for inclusion in Mr Vaughan’s report should be made by Friday, 22 March 2012 at the latest.  They should be made, preferably, by email at, or in writing to Derek Vaughan MEP, 4th Floor, Transport House, 1 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9SD.
