Welsh MEP hosts EU funding summit

Derek Vaughan MEP

A meeting organised by Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan, to discuss how best to improve the impact of EU funding at a local and regional level has drawn support from across Europe with participants attending the European Parliament in Brussels to share best practice and analyse recent European Commission proposals.

Representatives from the UK, Holland, Estonia, Romania, Denmark and Finland amongst others joined forces, under the chairmanship of Mr Vaughan MEP, at a roundtable event yesterday looking at ways to streamline and co-ordinate local EU funding programmes, reduce duplication, and enhance the effective use of taxpayers’ money.

Speaking from Brussels, DEREK VAUGHAN MEP said:

“More work needs to be done to ensure that EU funds are brought together at a local and regional level, helping applicants and used to maximise the effect that they can have on communities.”

“The meeting was an ideal opportunity to hear about examples of best practice and to find mechanisms so that funding streams can be harnessed and managed to provide the biggest impact.”

“MEPs, representatives of local and regional government, organisations and front line practitioners combined efforts and a report will follow from the discussions recommending improvements to the current system.  These talks could have a real effect on how EU funds are used in Wales post-2013 and I look forward to taking the results of the meeting forward in the coming months.”
