Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan, has been appointed to play a vital role in developing European policy on research and technology as well as assuming responsibilities in relation to the EU’s budget and its expenditure.

Mr Vaughan will sit on the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry and act as a substitute member on its Budget and Budgetary Control Committees.

Previously Leader of both Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and the Welsh Local Government Association, Mr Vaughan will bring extensive experience to what are considered to be amongst the most significant committees in the European Parliament.

“In the current economic climate, if we are to create and deliver sustainable long term jobs in Wales and across the rest of Europe then we need to be at the forefront of technological change. Energy generation, telecommunications and research and development are crucial sectors that will play a major part in the recovery.”

“With a budget last year of over 116 billion euros, the EU covers a wide range of responsibilities including strategic transport projects, food safety, fighting discrimination, economic development and overseas aid.”

“Getting value for money for Welsh taxpayers is a top priority and I welcome the chance to represent Wales’ interests on this important issue.”
