The announcement, made today, that Corus are to invest £185m in its Port Talbot plant has been welcomed by Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan.

Mr Vaughan, a former leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, recently visited the plant to hold talks with management and trade unions on the future of the steel industry in Wales.  He said:

“The rebuilding of furnace No 4 is a shot in the arm for the local community and a reward for the professionalism and commitment of its highly skilled, highly motivated workforce.”

“The steel industry continues to play a key role in the Welsh economy.  This massive investment will secure thousands of much needed jobs and give the plant a sustainable and viable long term future.”

“Corus have given its workers in Port Talbot a big thumbs up and, having close ties to the area, I am delighted that steel-working will continue to prosper there for the next 20 years or so, at least.”
