Welsh Labour MEP in Pakistan aid call

Derek Vaughan MEP

Local Euro-MP Derek Vaughan has thanked people across Wales for the tremendous generosity they have shown towards the Pakistan Floods Appeal, and hit out at European leaders who have failed to stump up aid for the region.

Speaking after a debate in Strasbourg on the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, DEREK VAUGHAN MEP said:

"I've been proud to tell colleagues in the European Parliament about the amazing generosity being shown by people in Wales.”

"It's in stark contrast to the approach taken by some European governments who have been reluctant to commit spending on this appalling tragedy.”

"Our reputation as a part of the world that will reach out and help people in need is being undermined by governments who are unwilling to give the aid that is so desperately needed."

The DEC is the umbrella group for Britain’s leading aid and relief charities including Oxfam, Save the Children and Christian Aid – and has already raised an incredible £47 million to support relief efforts.

Over 20 million people are now estimated to be impacted by the devastating flooding in Pakistan, and hundreds of thousands have been affected by water-borne diseases. 1.5 million homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Mr Vaughan added: "I'd like to thank everyone who has given to the DEC appeal. I will continue to push European governments into matching their kind words with hard cash."
