Welsh Euro MP speaks up for Cardiff as European Capital of Sport for 2014

At the ACES Europe (European Capitals of Sport Association) Awards Ceremony, hosted in the European Parliament in Brussels last week, Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, hailed the prospect of Cardiff being the European Capital of Sport in 2014.

Speaking at the event, Mr Vaughan, welcomed the recognition of Cardiff as a leading European city when it comes to sport and the boost that the prestigious designation will bring to Wales’ capital city.

He said:

“Cardiff has a long and proud history of playing host to major sporting events ranging from Six Nations Rugby matches and the Olympics to Ashes cricket test matches and so much more.”

“Having been confirmed as the European Capital of Sport for 2014, it is clear that Cardiff is now at the top table in Europe for delivering first class, world prominent sport.  By doing so, it puts not just Cardiff but also Wales on the map and attracts new visitors and millions of pounds to the local economy every year.”

“It is also a mark of Cardiff’s strength in developing participation in sport at the grassroots level in communities throughout the city.”

“Cardiff will be following in the footsteps of cities including Madrid, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Valencia and Dublin, as the European Capital of Sport and 2014 will be an ideal opportunity to continue to showcase what it can do.”
