Welsh Euro MP leads delegation to verify Spanish use of EU funds

Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan will this week be heading up a European Parliamentary mission to Madrid and Valencia to see how Spain is using EU Structural Funding and to look at improvements and its management and control systems.

The delegation consisting of members of the Parliament’s Budget Control Committee will visit Spain from Tuesday 19 June to Thursday 21 June and meet with Inigo Mendez de Vigo, Secretary of State for the EU, national ministers for finance, development and employment, Alberto Fabra, President of the Generalitat Valenciana, and regional government representatives from Andalusia and Castilla La Mancha.

The visit comes as a result of a recent report that looked at the use of European Structural Funding in Spain and problems in its control measures.

DEREK VAUGHAN MEP said:

“Structural Funds are important in driving forward economic growth and creating sustainable jobs.  The delegation will be meeting with ministers and visiting projects to see at first hand how the funds can be best used to modernise local economies, invest in research and development and support progress in infrastructure building.”

“Spain currently has the highest unemployment rate in the EU at 24.4%, with over 5.6 million people without a job, and an economy that has slipped back into recession again.  Structural Funds can play a key part in addressing some of the underlying long term issues behind this.”

“We will be looking closely at their management of EU funding and listening to the experiences of those involved, finding out about any difficulties they are facing in their control systems and how they can be improved to make the use of funds more effective and accountable.”
