Welsh Euro MP challenges Barroso on future of Structural Funding post-2013

Derek Vaughan MEP

Welsh Labour MEP Derek Vaughan has called on European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, to recognise the needs of Wales, and similar regions in Europe, when it comes to deciding on proposals on Structural Funds after 2013.

Mr Vaughan, quizzed the President directly during proceedings in the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week, as concerns grew following the leak of a confidential EU Budget Review Paper, which could see Wales missing out on hundreds of millions of pounds of European cash.

“The proposals contained in the paper would cause huge damage and have severe effects post-2013 on major projects that are helping to transform Wales.”

“All parts of the country are affected under the plans for Convergence and Competitiveness Funding and if we do not qualify for Transitional Status and continuing support after that date then the end result could be catastrophic.”

“Mr Barroso confirmed that he will be bringing forward detailed proposals under the new Commission and I await them with great interest.  I will continue to press the case, in the meantime, so that Wales gets a fair deal under the new system.”
