Working hard for Wales in Europe

Sept 2017 Newsletter

Staying in the EU is the best way to protect our economy, jobs and rights. The second best option is for the UK to remain permanently in the Single Market and Customs Union.
I'm therefore pleased to see Labour has shifted its policy and is now planning to stay inside the Single Market and Customs Union during a transitional period post Brexit.
But we now need to go one step further in order to protect our economy and Welsh jobs.
Being part of the Single Market gives us tariff free trade with the rest of the EU. Leaving the single market, even after a transitional period would see hefty trade tariffs and non-tariff barriers meaning many businesses leaving Wales and taking jobs with them.
The Labour Campaign for the Single Market seeks to shift Labour Party policy into one of unequivocal support for staying in the Single Market by remaining a member of the European Economic Area and the Customs Union.
We have two weeks at the beginning of September to get a motion submitted to Labour Party Conference to ensure this is Labour policy.  You can submit this contemporary motion to your Constituency Labour Party, calling for a debate at conference. See the website:
We need to act now to keep the UK in the Single Market and the Customs Union. Apart from staying in the EU, this is the only way to protect jobs and the Welsh economy.
Whatever the outcome of the negotiations, I believe it is legitimate and democratic to have a public vote on the final deal. Therefore we should keep our options open.
