North West Wales regeneration boost will secure £5.8m extra funding

News that Anglesey and North Gwynedd is to receive £1.9m as part of the Welsh Government’s Mon a Menai Regeneration Programme has been welcomed by the region’s Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN.

The announcement will also secure a further £5.8m of investment from the EU and other sources which Mr Vaughan says will be a significant boost to the local economy:

“Fourteen projects will receive support to drive the renewal of Anglesey and North Gwynedd forward to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges that it faces.”

“By targeting things such as infrastructure, tourism and the digital economy, new opportunities will be created for the local workforce and local businesses.”

“The ongoing commitment by the Welsh Government and the EU will go a long way to providing people with the chance to develop their skills and gain better-paid, more sustainable employment in the area than has previously been the case.”

“These schemes will provide the building blocks for more public and private investment into North West Wales and this confirmation is very welcome given the present economic situation.”

Projects awarded funding include:

•    Anglesey County Council - £350k to support the development of sites in Llangefni and Mona to address the shortage of modern business premises.
•    Forestry Commission Wales - £170k to improve visitor attractions in Newborough Forest.
•    Anglesey Boat Company - £300k to provide nine units for marine businesses in Gallows Point, Beaumaris.
•    Gwynedd Council - £90k for the Gwynedd Digidol project to improve access to broadband and promote the digital economy.
•    Gwynedd Council’s Environment Service - £100k to develop new 1km route to extend the existing Lon Las Ogwen route from Tregarth to Bethesda.
