Newport “a city on the up” says Welsh Labour MEP

Derek Vaughan MEP

On a recent visit to Newport (Friday, 23 April 2010), Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan said that the ongoing transformation of the area means that Newport is “definitely a city on the way up”.

Mr Vaughan spent the morning at the University of Wales, Newport’s Caerleon Campus meeting with staff and students to find out more about their enterprise and research projects including its Institute of Advanced Broadcasting, before receiving a guided tour of the Newport School of Art, Media and Design.

He then met with senior managers from Newport Unlimited to discuss progress on the economic and social regeneration of Newport and on future plans to increase prosperity and employment for local people.

Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, said:

“The face of Newport is changing beyond all recognition with new developments springing up on a regular basis.  It has become a more confident, attractive place to live and do business and is definitely a city on the way up.”

“Large scale investment has been secured in recent years to create more, highly paid jobs and to regenerate the city so that it can continue to attract both public and private sector employment.”

“The European Union has played a major part, providing funding for environmental improvements, business support services, community based projects - such as credit union branches - and the creation of the Malpas Court Sustainability Centre.  It has also been used to develop facilities and courses at the University of Wales, Newport and, most noticeably, to help finance the new River Usk Footbridge.”

“With exciting events like the Ryder Cup coming up in the Autumn, Newport is making a name for itself in Europe and right across the World.”
