More action needed to tackle online child abuse

Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan, has joined calls for greater international co-operation to strengthen the fight against online child sexual abuse content.

Signing up to support a Written Declaration in the European Parliament which highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to work across national and international boundaries, Mr Vaughan said:

“Sadly, the production, possession and distribution of such content is a cruel reality that we must all confront.”

“This crime is abhorrent and we need to increase awareness, help the authorities to tackle it in Wales, the UK and abroad and continue to campaign for higher standards in internet security on a cross-border basis.”

“International working and sharing of expertise is absolutely crucial in cracking down on online child sexual abuse and the European Commission should make the case on a global basis, investigating the source of this material, concentrating on developing countries, in particular, where it is an increasing problem.”

Written Declaration 0003/2013 on highlighting the global dimension of the fight against online child sexual abuse content can be found here.
