Maesteg Outdoor Market to get £2.5m upgrade

Maesteg Market

A multi-million pound renovation scheme for the Outdoor Market area in Maesteg has been given the go-ahead after approval was granted to provide £2.5 million worth of support from the European Regional Development Fund and the Welsh Assembly Government’s Western Valleys Strategic Regeneration Area Fund.

The proposals include a new design for the market area, new buildings and improvements to the nearby bus station waiting area.  Further consultation will now be carried out to finalise the plans which will also incorporate a new focal point for the community to be used as an open space and a place suitable for hosting local events and visiting markets.

Welcoming the announcement, Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, said:

“I am pleased to see Maesteg benefitting from European funds which will make a huge difference in regenerating and improving the outdoor market area.”

“It is a vote of confidence in the future of the town and a vital boost to local traders in these times of economic difficulty.”

“There will inevitably be some inconvenience for stallholders whilst the renovations are carried out and I hope that an amicable and workable solution can be put in place to help them through this period.  However, I am confident that the investment in the market will prove to be significant is securing its long-term future and in attracting even more visitors to Maesteg to see what it can offer.”
