Local sports clubs to have their say on new EU sports strategy

RUGBY

A wide ranging online consultation on the future of sport in the European Union closes at the end of month with a call from Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan, for local sports clubs in Wales to make their voices heard.

Under new rules introduced as part of the Lisbon Treaty, the EU now has an important role in promoting and developing sport across Member States.  The European Commission is currently assessing the views of clubs, governing bodies and other organisations on what their priorities should be.

Issues that are being considered include the role of volunteers in sport, the protection of young people from exploitation and the governance of sporting authorities.  The community and social impact of sport, the need to improve public health and the taking of performance enhancing drugs are also being discussed.

Mr Vaughan, recently elected as Chair of the European Parliament’s All Party Group on Rugby Union, said:

“This is a real opportunity for participants, especially at the grassroots level of sport here in Wales, to shape how they would like to see things run and developed in the future.”

“The consultation takes less than 20 minutes to complete and covers all types of sport, from volunteer and community level right up to the professional elite end.”

“The health and vitality of sport is vital in almost every single town, village and city in Wales.  Views put forward during this process will define the policies of the EU in this area for many years to come.”

The consultation can be found here.  The deadline for submissions is 01 June 2010.
