INTERNSHIP POSITION IN THE OFFICE OF DEREK VAUGHAN MEP


Start date: w/c 27th August 2012. The internship will finish at the end of July 2013
Salary: In line with European Parliament pay scale (approx 1500EUR/month)

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity ideally suited to a recent graduate looking to gain experience in a fast paced political environment. The post is based in the European Parliament in Brussels. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and proactive with a flexible approach to working hours and duties.

Derek Vaughan is Labour MEP for Wales. He is a member or substitute on the following European Parliament committees, delegations and intergroups:
-Budget committee (member)
-Budgetary Control committee (substitute)
-Regional Development committee (substitute)
-Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (vice president)
-European Parliament Rugby Union Intergroup (co-chair)
-Friends of New Zealand Group

Duties will include:

•    Day-to-day management of Derek's Brussels diary
o    Dealing efficiently with a wide range of event invitations and meeting requests
o    Updating the diary with committee meetings, group meetings and the plenary agenda
o    Making travel arrangements
o    Making arrangements for visitor groups or events in the European Parliament when required
o    Undertaking basic research and providing briefings for Derek in preparation for meetings on a wide range of issues

•    General office administration and correspondence
o    Responding competently to correspondence from a wide range of lobbyists and pressure groups, constituents, other politicians and the media
o    Managing the content of the office email
o    Working with colleagues in the Cardiff and Wrexham offices on occasional constituency casework

•    Other parliamentary duties
o    Drafting and submitting parliamentary questions to the European Commission
o    Helping with the drafting of Derek's monthly newsletter
o    Attending occasional meetings or functions on Derek's behalf
o    Liaising with colleagues in the European Parliament as well as with other European institutions, national and regional politicians, government representatives, the media and other relevant organisations

•    Following the work of delegations and intergroups, including:
o    Attending meetings and taking notes when required
o    Communicating with the relevant secretariat
o    Developing knowledge on the relevant areas


Essentials

•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•    The ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
•    Organisation skills with an emphasis on prioritising workload
•    The ability to communicate confidently and effectively with a wide range of colleagues in the European Parliament, elsewhere in Brussels and in the constituency
•    A proactive approach to work and the ability to work flexible hours when needed
•    Excellent written and computer skills
•    An interest in Welsh, UK and European current affairs
•    Labour party membership (existing or willing to join)
•    Excellent English (native speaker or equivalent)

Desirables

•    Experience of working in an office environment
•    Experience of working in a political or similar environment
•    An interest in politics and an understanding of the workings of the EU institutions
•    Knowledge of French
•    Knowledge of the Welsh political landscape would be an advantage
