Plans to redevelop the derelict lido in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd have been boosted by £3m worth of investment from the European Regional Development Fund.
The support, part of an overall package totalling £6.3m, will enable restoration of the Lido with three heated swimming pool, a café, dry adventure play area, external covered showers, heated changing facilities and a learning centre and museum.
Welcoming the announcement, Merthyr born, local Welsh Labour MEP DEREK VAUGHAN, said:
"The regeneration of the Lido at Ynysangharad Park will breathe new life into it, safeguarding one of the largest and most historic lidos in the UK and transforming it into a facility that will be used by thousands of local people and visitors.
I used to visit the Lido regularly when I was a child growing up in Aberfan. It is a key local landmark and the improvements will make it fit for purpose for future generations to enjoy in the same way as we did.
EU funding is playing an increasingly important role in regenerating Valleys communities and is helping many areas, such as Pontypridd, regenerate facilities and create new jobs. This project will complement the EU investment currently ongoing in Pontypridd Town Centre and is a sign of the confidence in the town going forward."
