EU Higher Education co-operation will benefit Welsh students and universities – Welsh MEP

The European Parliament yesterday supported moves to allow students studying anywhere in the EU to graduate and have their qualification officially recognised throughout the rest of the EU.

Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, backed the report before MEPs in Strasbourg which called for all EU institutions to fully prioritise the “Bologna Process” under which this policy is due to be implemented and to strengthen the European Higher Education Area so that universities across the EU can work closer together.

Mr Vaughan said:

“Students at Welsh universities would benefit greatly from having their qualifications recognised in all European Member States when it comes to further study, work placements and in competing in the wider jobs market.”

“There is still a lot of work to do at an EU level to look at ways of encouraging universities to work together across borders particularly when it comes to consistent standards and curricula and the pooling of knowledge and expertise and this report called for efforts to intensify.”

“Welsh universities can, and do, play an important role in the Welsh economy and with co-operation at an EU level, they can continue to punch above their weight in helping Wales hold its own in the international economy.”

“They are not just facing competition from other UK universities or those in Europe but from across the world as well. It is only by working with our European partners that Wales will be able to capitalise on the great opportunities that are out there on an international basis.”

The resolution passed by the European Parliament is in advance of the biannual Bologna process Ministerial Summit (to be held in Bucharest on 26-27 April 2012).
