A decision by Denbighshire county councillors to spend £500,000 to meet cost increases on the Rhyl Foryd harbour project will secure £9 million of Welsh Government and European Regional Development Fund support says the area’s Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN.

The regeneration scheme which includes a new pedestrian bridge over the River Clwyd, an extension to the sea wall for up to 100 moorings and a public square with shops, cafes and other buildings, is due to be completed in 2013.

DEREK VAUGHAN MEP said:

“This particular project is key to the economic renewal of Rhyl and will be one of the biggest ever single investments made in the town.”

“Not only will it be a fantastic working harbour and an addition to what Rhyl can offer as a tourist destination, it will also provide a platform to attract further investment, both public and private, going forwards.”

“The scheme will open up a wealth of opportunities for local people and local businesses.  By agreeing to show their commitment to the plans, the county council will enable EU and Welsh Government funding to be unlocked for the project.”

“At such an economically difficult time and with savage cuts being made by the UK coalition government, EU funding is playing an increasingly important role in Welsh communities.  That is why I am so pleased that the future of the Rhyl Foryd harbour scheme has been safeguarded so that EU money can now be used to help transform the town for the better.”
