Christchurch RC Primary, Rhyl celebrates “Europe Week”

Derek Vaughan MEP

Welsh Labour MEP, Derek Vaughan, visited Christchurch RC Primary School recently (Friday, 30 April 2010) as part of a pilot “Europe Week” project which helped pupils learn more about what it means to be European citizens and to raise awareness of Europe and how the European Union works.

Over 450 pupils from the school participated in activities and workshops across 5 days including language and culture taster sessions, cookery and art classes as well as a specially devised “European Olympics”.

The initiative, supported by Europe Direct, drew to a close with a talk by Mr Vaughan on life as a Member of the European Parliament and a special prize giving ceremony attended by pupils, parents and local councillors.

Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN said:

“I was very impressed with the knowledge and understanding of European issues that the children had gained throughout the week.  They were very keen to know about my work as an MEP for Wales and how the different countries in the EU are working together.”

“The school clearly benefits from the commitment and enthusiasm to learning of their staff, governors parents and the pupils themselves.”

“Some of the work that the school is doing in terms of engaging their pupils with what is going on in the wider world is first class and I am very pleased to have been able to bring a little bit of Europe to their doorstep.”
