Proposals by the European Commission to introduce a European Youth Guarantee scheme as part of a new package of employment measures have been welcomed by DEREK VAUGHAN MEP, as a step in the right direction.
The recommendations by the Commission comes after the European Council and European Commission supported a long standing campaign to provide every young person in the EU with a job, further education or a training place within four months of leaving education or becoming employed.
Welsh Labour Euro MP, DEREK VAUGHAN, said:
“With almost one million youngsters in the UK currently without employment, and with similar problems across the EU, the Youth Guarantee can be a key component of a strong overall policy to produce more jobs and growth in the UK and European economies.”
“Running alongside EU-wide plans to improve the quality and availability of apprenticeships, earlier interventions to support young people facing unemployment and effective monitoring of the implementation of the Youth Guarantee itself, it is a promising sign that the Commission is taking action to deal with this issue in a co-ordinated and determined manner.”
“It is now up to the Commission and individual Member States to take this forward using Structural Funds, in particular, to support and develop schemes that reduce the unacceptable levels of youth unemployment.”
“By providing young people with training, qualifications and the everyday job experience that they need, these measures are a good start in tackling the alarmingly high rates of youth joblessness that risk leaving a generation of youngster behind.”
