European funding worth £6.1m has been announced to support eight key flood and coastal defence projects across Wales.
The money will help reduce the risk of flooding for over 1,000 homes and businesses and has been allocated to the following projects:
- Afon Wnion, Dolgellau
- Afon Gele, Abergele
- The Clwyd Estuary
- Riverside, Newport
- Coldbrook, Barry
- Whitchurch Brook, Cardiff
- The Lledan & Ceunant Brooks, Welshpool
- River Ennig, Talgarth, Powys
Welsh Labour MEP, DEREK VAUGHAN, said:
"This announcement is great news for those people who live in high flood risk areas. Flooding can be a real problem and the best solution is to act early and put prevention measures in place.
There are many areas in Wales where this is a key issue and the European investment will play a key role in helping us manage the risks and tackle the effects of flooding where it is most needed.
It moves these projects closer to fruition and, in conjunction, with Welsh Assembly and Environment Agency support, the funding will enable these communities in future to deal with the problem at source."
